The city government's campaign to plant 0.8 million trees in the city by June 30, 2002 got off with the planting of a coconut sapling by the Local Government Minister Dewan Mohammed Yousuf Farooqui at Bagh-e-Quaid-e-Azam (Old Polo Ground) here on Tuesday. City Nazim Naimatullah Khan, Naib Nazim Tariq Hasan and DCO Karachi were also present on the occasion. About a hundred saplings were also planted by school children. Dewan Yousuf Farooqui said as the planting of 0.8 million saplings is a huge task, private sector organizations and NGOs should also be involved in this campaign. He said the greenery in this polluted city would bring improvement in otherwise deteriorating environmental conditions. It was informed that the tree plantation campaign would be carried out with the coordination of provincial forest department and some 60 organizations are engaged in this activity.
