Located 7 km off the GT Road at Dina, the imposing Rohtas Fort is one of the finest castles of the sub-continent. The fort is named after the fort at Rohtas in Bengal, scene of one of Sher Shah's great victories The Fort was ordered to be built by Sher Shah Suri in 1543 to prevent the return of his defeated enenmy Humayun, and also to subdue the local Gakhkhar tribes According to legend the architect, Shahu Sultani, was commanded to build a massive and impregnable fort in 3 years. He was almost beheaded for having constructed a smaller fort than envisaged. He was given a further 2 years to build a fort more in keeping with the Emperors wishes The outer fortification wall runs for over 4 km, following the natural contour of the hill uopn which the fort stands. Its reinforced at intervals by 68 bastions and 12 gates Lately much work has been put into making the Fort more accessable Bringing the monuments back to their former glory
